What's been happening at RiverRescues Animal Sanctuary in Edinburgh?
In The Eye Of The Storm
The calm of the new year is still upon us but that may all change in the coming weeks. New arrivals and reservations have already occurred and there will be a further influx of new species joining us at the rescue.
AJ has been hard at work, doing his festive job and has come back to an influx of animal adoptee e-mail propositions.
New Room, New Arrivals
Several newcomers to the quarantine room have seen numbers rise: one loud and adventurous Hermann's Tortoise, a fiery Rainbow Boa, one small baby Ball Python and a beautifully coloured Corn Snake. All came from loving homes but they could no longer give them the proper care, they felt they deserved.

Since their arrival, they will be in quarantine conditions before joining the other critters next door. We'll keep monitoring them in the meantime to check if they have any medical issues.
Feeding Time
Monday was the moment to feed all of the willing habitants of the rescue. Chopping dead baby chick's heads, pulling their legs off and then dividing their body was the first task. The Bosc Monitors were thankful for our preparation and happily consumed the little chicks. It is a rare treat for them as they are predominantly insectivores.
Mice from small pinkies to extra large rats were served up to the Snakes and one lucky tortoise. Red-Footed Tortoises need their protein so Dahlia got a double-helping of pinkie mice.
The snake residents were, mostly, all eager to chow down. There were a few larger species that didn't take the bait. They were still full from last week's extra large rat feeding. Your writer managed to get hands-on experience and fed some of them a nice, juicy mouse.

Reservation Confirmation
Your familiar writer has finally confirmed and reserved Phil, the Crested Gecko, for his first adoption adventure. His bioactive enclosure still needs to be fully set up with waterproofing measures applied, however. If the fumes don't form a headache then the scouring of the market, for "natural" powdered crested gecko food, and best placement of each climbing branch, might.
Lola, the Boa Constrictor Constrictor, is set to join Hazel, our former Hog Island Sunglow Boa Constrictor Imperator, and the lovely couple that adopted Hazel. She is another heavy weighted resident at the sanctuary and will leave us with heavy hearted goodbyes.
Shockingly and surprisingly, there is an exit route for Mango, our 'permanent' resident bearded dragon. A close friend of AJ has been given the chance to adopt this rescue favourite. We will miss the friendly-mannered dragon a lot.
Fidget, the Corn Snake, and Sandy, the candy stripe Corn Snake, have finally been snapped up by their reservers respectfully. We fully expect them to thrive in their new forever surroundings.
